Staying safe during COVID-19 - latest updates

Test and Trace update

Last night the Government released its guidance to restaurants on taking customer contact details to support the “Test and Trace” scheme, which is designed to help the Government contact people who may have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

The Government has asked restaurants and pubs to take the contact details of customers dining-in at their premises in order to help with contacting people. Collecting this information is not a legal requirement, however, the Government is strongly encouraging restaurants to support their efforts in order to stop new outbreaks of the virus.

The new guidance makes clear that restaurants only ever need to collect the contact information of people dining-in the restaurant. They do not need to collect contact information for takeaway customers, or for Deliveroo riders collecting food from the restaurant.

Staying safe as England reopens

As restaurants continue to reopen, we expect more customers to place orders with Deliveroo which means you’ll be busier and be able to earn more. But it’s critical that you continue to do all you can to stay safe while you work.

Always follow our contact-free policies

To safeguard your health, as well as the health of restaurant staff and customers, it is vital that you continue to follow the Government’s latest social distancing guidelines and Deliveroo’s contact-free policies:

  • Stay at least 2 metres away from others. This includes while you’re waiting to be offered an order, waiting to collect one, or when you’re just taking a break. If the restaurant you are collecting from has safety measures in place (like protective screens) and tells you it’s ok to do so, you can stand 1 metre apart.
  • The pickup of every order should be contact-free. If a restaurant does not have a contact-free pickup process in place please make sure you let the Rider Support team know so we can take action.
  • Always deliver contact-free. You should never pass an order over to a customer directly. Every order you deliver should be placed on the ground outside the customer’s door for them to collect. Make sure the customer has collected it before leaving.
  • Check ID at a safe distance. If a customer orders age-restricted items, ask them to hold their ID out at arm’s length so you can check they’re [X] years old or older.

Stay safe on the road

More people are using the roads again to get to work, visit friends or go to the shops. When you’re on the road, always put your personal safety first:

  • Stay aware of what other road users and pedestrians around you are doing. This will give you more time to react and avoid any possible danger if someone is driving or acting recklessly.
  • Stay well within the speed limit, wear highly visible clothing and follow all road rules. If you ride a bicycle, use cycle lanes where possible and do not cycle on the pavement or other pedestrianised areas.
  • If you or another rider is involved in an accident, call 999 straight away. Once you are safe, let the Rider Support team know. Whenever you’re working with Deliveroo you’re covered by our free accident insurance. This ensures that you can receive supporting income if you’re unable to work following an accident.

Keep yourself refreshed when it comes to road safety. Further guidance and safety videos are available on the rider website and can be accessed at any time.

Track & trace and Self Employment Income Support Scheme extension

Yesterday the Government officially launched a COVID-19 track and trace system across England and Scotland. From now on, anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 will be asked for a list of people who they have come into close contact with for at least 15 minutes in the 48 hours before developing symptoms. If you test positive for COVID-19 and are asked to provide the contact details of people you have had contact with, you should do so and follow government guidance.

If someone who has tested positive names you on their list of contacts you will get a call, text or email from the Government letting you know and asking you to self-isolate for 14 days. Again, it’s important that you follow any official advice.

Please let the Rider Support team know if you’ve been contacted immediately so that we can take appropriate steps to help protect everyone’s health. While you self-isolate, your account will be suspended.

If you are contacted, only you need to self-isolate. Other members of your household do not need to isolate with you unless you start to experience symptoms of COVID-19. If you do start to experience symptoms you should request a test through the Government website.

If you are asked to self-isolate as part of the track and trace system you can claim from the Rider Support Fund, subject to being able to provide verifiable evidence that you have been asked to self-isolate.

Today the Government also announced that it is extending the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme, so self-employed people, including Deliveroo riders, whose earnings have been affected by COVID-19 and who are eligible for the scheme can apply for a second and final grant, worth 70% of their average monthly earnings. This will be paid in August and capped at £6,570. You can read more about this news and other support available through the Government here.

Bounce Back Loans

The Government have announced the launch of Bounce Bank loans which you might be eligible for. The scheme is government-backed and allows small businesses to take out loans of up to £50,000 with a flat rate of 2.5% interest. You can find out more on gov.uk here.

In order to apply for a Bounce Back loan you may need to provide a tax return. We’ve partnered with Untied, the UK’s personal tax app, who are offering a free service for Deliveroo riders, making tax filing as easy as possible.

You will need to make your own decision as to whether to take out a Bounce Back loan or use Untied’s services and you may need to sign up to contractual terms with lenders or Untied which Deliveroo will not be a party to and has no control over.

Latest guidance for riders from the UK Government

This week the Government published its new strategy to slowly lift the rules currently in place to stop the spread of COVID-19.

As part of the strategy, the Government has published new recommendations on the use of face coverings. The Government has said that people should consider using face coverings when in enclosed spaces, shops or places where they will meet people outside their household. However, face coverings are not required and the Government is clear that it is up to each individual to decide whether or not to use one. You can read the Government’s full recommendation here.

The Government has also been clear that face coverings does not mean surgical face masks. Other face coverings, such as homemade masks or scarves are equally suitable. Surgical face masks are only required when in healthcare settings, such as a hospital.

The Government’s guidance is very clear that, even if you choose to wear a facemask, the most important thing you can do to stop the spread of COVID-19 is to maintain a safe social distance wherever possible. This means that the pickup and delivery of all orders should continue to be contact-free and you should avoid standing too close to other riders or members of the public when waiting for orders, even when you are wearing a mask or face covering.

If you do choose to wear a face covering, it is important you do so safely. The Government has published a guide on how to wear a face covering in a way that reduces the risk of contamination. The main things you should do are:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for 20 seconds or use hand sanitiser before putting a face covering on, and after removing it
  • When wearing a face covering, avoid touching your face or face covering, as this could contaminate them with germs from your hands
  • Change your face covering if it becomes damp or if you’ve touched it
  • Continue to wash your hands regularly
  • Practice social distancing wherever possible

Ordering masks and sanitiser through Deliveroo

We are pleased to have been able to provide riders across the UK with face masks and hand sanitiser already and our team are working hard to have more manufactured and sent to you as soon as possible.

Complete this form to place an order for more masks and hand sanitiser.

Any rider who has completed at least 1 delivery in the past 3 weeks and has an active rider account will be eligible to receive free face masks and hand sanitiser. If your account was recently temporarily disabled due to COVID-19 and you want to ride again, your order will be processed based on the last 3 weeks your account was active. And if you previously ordered masks and sanitiser, you can place another order.

Please note that because of high demand and enhanced border checks it may take a few weeks for your order to arrive. We ask for your patience and understanding during this time. The masks ordered through the form above will be reusable and come with care instructions.

If you are able to purchase a mask for yourself in the meantime, you can apply for a payment of up to £20 to cover the cost. Please make sure the receipt you submit matches the requirements outlined at the start of the form.

Please remember, if you begin to experience any symptoms of COVID-19 or need to self-isolate, follow all medical advice, do not log in and let the Rider Support team know immediately. You can read all of our updates so far on this webpage, including how to apply for Deliveroo’s Rider Support Fund or access financial support through the Government should you need to.

Everyone who is working and provides an essential service, which includes Deliveroo riders, can now access a free COVID-19 test through the Government. You should book a test or request a home test kit if you begin to experience any symptoms of COVID-19.

You’ll need to complete an identity check when requesting a home test kit and tests will also be available to anyone who lives with you.

Once you arrive at the testing site for your appointment, staff will guide you through the process. The NHS will aim to inform you of your test results within 48 hours.

Your results

If you test positive for COVID-19, you should follow all medical advice given to you by the NHS. You should also let the Rider Support team know so we can take appropriate steps to help protect the health of other riders, restaurant staff and Deliveroo customers.

If you need financial help due to COVID-19, we’ll let you know how you can apply for the Rider Support Fund as well as other types of financial support available through the Government.

If you test negative and don’t have any symptoms you can continue to ride with Deliveroo when and where you want. The pickup and delivery of all orders should remain contact-free and you should still respect social distancing rules by staying at least 2 metres away from others, including other riders, at all times.

Updates from the UK Government

Tonight the Government announced further measures to help protect everyone’s health during the COVID-19 outbreak.

These measures called for people to stay indoors except for when they need to exercise, shop for essential items, have a medical need or have to travel for essential work. You can read about all the measures the Government is taking here.

Crucially, the Prime Minister encouraged the public to use food delivery services where they can, which includes Deliveroo. This means you can continue to ride when and where you want.

Food delivery is an essential service – bringing food to millions of people across the UK. When working, it’s extremely important that you remember to respect social distancing recommendations and make sure you stay at least 2 metres apart from other people at all times. This includes when you’re waiting to collect an order as well as in between orders. Groups of more than 2 people who do not live together will be asked to move on or, in some instances, fined by the police.

The pick up and delivery of all orders should continue to be contact-free to ensure you don’t come into direct contact with anyone while you work. You can find more information about this on the rider website.

If you start to feel ill or test positive for COVID-19, follow all medical advice, do not log in and let us know immediately via Rider Support.

You can read about the Government support available for self-employed people here. Riders who work regularly with Deliveroo and can provide proof that they have contracted the virus or been placed in quarantine by a medical authority can also apply for financial help through our Rider Support Fund.

The safety of our riders, restaurant partners and customers is our priority..

Contact-free pick up & delivery

From today the pick up and delivery of all orders must be contact-free. This is to help protect the safety and health of everyone in the UK as the COVID-19 outbreak continues.

Contact-free pick up
We have asked all of our restaurant partners to introduce contact-free pick up for Deliveroo riders.

To enable contact-free pick up, many restaurants will:

  • Continue to properly seal all packaging and bags using tape or stickers
  • Create a waiting area for riders inside the restaurant where they can wait a safe distance away from each other
  • Create a waiting area for other riders outside the restaurant – riders should stay a safe distance away from other riders and staff while waiting outside even if there is no dedicated waiting area
  • Create pick up areas, as far from food preparation as possible, that means no direct contact between riders and restaurant staff will be required to pick up an order
  • Have someone from their team manage pick ups during busy times
  • Make sure that only 1 order at a time is collected from a pick up area
  • Make soap and water or hand sanitising gel available to riders whenever possible

Please make sure that you bring your thermal bag into the restaurant with you when picking up an order. You should always place the order in your thermal bag and seal it before leaving the restaurant.

Restaurant wait times may be impacted because of this exceptional situation, so we ask for your patience and understanding during this time. We also ask that you respect social distancing recommendations at all times and remain at least 2 metres away from others while you wait.

Contact-free delivery
Every time a customer places a new order, ‘Contact-free delivery’ will now be automatically selected. We have sent an email to our customers to tell them that all orders will be delivered this way from now on.

Follow these steps when making a contact-free delivery:

  1. Let the customer know you’ve arrived
  2. Leave the order outside the customer’s door
  3. Step back at least 2 metres and wait nearby for the customer to collect it
  4. Tap ‘Complete delivery’ only when you’ve seen the customer collect it

If the order contains age restricted products like alcohol or tobacco, you should still follow Deliveroo’s Challenge 25 policy. Ask the customer to hold their ID up for you to check, but don’t take it from them.

This evening the Government announced that all restaurants in the UK will be closed until further notice but customers will still be able to order from restaurants on Deliveroo.

This means you are still free to work when you want and can pick up orders from our restaurant partners. We are also in touch with all our restaurant partners and have let them know they can still provide food delivery services through Deliveroo.

While waiting to collect an order, please respect social distancing recommendations and stand at least 2 metres away from other people, including restaurant staff and riders. Please also make sure you check the delivery notes of each order to see whether a customer has asked for it to be delivered contact-free.

The Government also made an important announcement about the support that’s available to self employed people, which includes Deliveroo riders:

Universal Credit
The amount you can receive from Universal Credit (UC) has increased to £95.40 from £73.10 per week.

You may also be able to claim extra to help with the cost of your rent through the Universal Credit system. The Government has increased the maximum amount of support available to people who pay rent.

You can claim Universal Credit if you are unable to work. To get Universal Credit you must create an online account and fill in an application.

If you need help creating an account or completing your application, call 0800 328 5644.

Tax payments
The Government has also said it will defer self-assessment tax payments. This means that any tax you owe does not need to be paid until January 2021.

‘New style’ Employment & Support Allowance (ESA)
You may also be able to access money quickly through ESA. If you qualify for ESA you will receive £73.10 per week (or £57.90 if you are under 25). To qualify for ESA you need to have paid enough National Insurance contributions in the last 2 – 3 years.

You will need to complete an application form to apply for ESA. You will then need to call the helpline (0800 328 5644) to book an appointment for a discussion about your claim.

Updates from the UK Government

This evening (16 March) the UK Government issued further advice about the COVID-19 outbreak and how we can help each other to stay safe and healthy. The government has encouraged people not to visit restaurants, cinemas, bars and other social venues. However – restaurants can stay open and continue to offer food delivery services.

The Government also advise:

  • If anyone in your household has either a high temperature or a persistent cough then everyone in the household should self isolate for 14 days
  • If you live on your own and have symptoms then you should isolate for 7 days
  • Everyone should avoid all unnecessary contact with other people

If you are healthy and no one in your household has symptoms then you are still able to ride with Deliveroo as normal. Currently, there is no evidence to support transmission of COVID-19 by food. Unlike foodborne viruses that make people ill through contaminated food, foodborne exposure to COVID-19 is not known to be a route of transmission.

From Sunday, older people and people with certain health conditions, who are at a higher risk of contracting the virus, will be asked to isolate themselves for a significant period. The NHS will be letting affected people know more about this over the next several days.

If you begin to show any symptoms of COVID-19, you should seek advice on the NHS 111 website, and avoid calling 111 unless your symptoms last for more than 7 days, or if you feel you can’t cope with the symptoms at home and may need to go to hospital.

The most up to date government guidance can be found here.

Contact-free deliveries

Starting today customers will be able to choose ‘Contact-free delivery’ at check-out. You’ll be able to see when a customer has selected this option in the order’s delivery notes. Limiting contact when delivering orders will help keep everyone healthy.

Government financial support

The UK Government has made it easier for self-employed people who need to self-isolate or are diagnosed with Coronavirus to get support through the benefits system. This includes people, like you, who ride with Deliveroo.

Deliveroo’s Rider Support Fund – for those impacted by COVID-19

Your safety is our priority and we want to make sure that riders who work regularly with Deliveroo and have contracted the virus or been placed in quarantine by a medical authority will be eligible for financial support for a period of up to 14 days.

Deliveroo is creating a support fund to make sure that riders impacted by the virus are supported during this difficult time.

This is a one-off fund that will be time-limited and designed to support riders in these unique and difficult circumstances. The policy will remain under review as this unprecedented situation develops.

Deliveroo has already issued guidance on how you can protect yourself and others. We remain in contact with relevant authorities on a daily basis and will continue to update you with all the latest advice as we receive it.

This fund is designed to support the riders who need it most. However, fraud is a criminal offence. It is important that we state that if the fund is abused we will enforce our rights to the fullest extent, which may include termination of your service agreement together with other legal remedies. We will also notify the police and other relevant enforcement agencies of any suspected abuse.

If you have contracted COVID-19, or have been placed in quarantine by a medical authority, please contact rider support for further information about how to apply for financial support from the fund.

For everyone else please take care and continue to check back for updated guidance on how to stay safe when working.

At Deliveroo we take the safety of our riders, restaurants and customers extremely seriously, in particular at this time when reports of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) are increasing.

We know that you will want to make sure you stay safe during this period, as well as help protect the health of restaurant partners and customers.

Below are a set of small but important steps you can take to help achieve this. We will keep this, and you, updated as the situation progresses.

UK Government and Public Health England Guidance

Public Health England (PHE) recommends that the following general cold and flu precautions are taken to help prevent people from catching and spreading COVID-19:

  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Put used tissues in the bin straight away
  • Wash your hands with soap and water often – use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available.
  • Try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces
  • Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean

Further NHS guidance is available online here, or on the World Health Organisation website.

Staying safe while working with Deliveroo

  • Make sure to regularly wash your Deliveroo kit or clothes you wear while riding. Click here to order new or replacement kit.
  • Wipe down your thermal bag before and after each time you ride.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water thoroughly before you go online, and carry a bottle of hand sanitiser with you so you can keep them clean throughout your time on the road.
  • Always store food in your thermal bag to help minimise the risk exposure to any potentially infectious airborne material.
  • Seal your bag as soon as you’ve packed an order and keep it closed until you’ve reached the customer’s location.
  • Regularly check Public Health England guidance to keep up to date on the advice that they provide.
  • Do not log in if you begin to feel unwell or display any symptoms of COVID-19. Seek medical attention straight away and avoid close contact with others. If you have booked slots that you need to cancel, reach out to us so we can freeze your statistics.
  • Immediately notify us if you have tested positive for COVID-19. We will need to contact any restaurant partners and customers who may you may have come into contact with during that period, so we can check whether they are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19.

Working with restaurant partners

We have also shared guidance with our restaurant partners to help ensure their premises and employees stay as clean and safe as possible. With this in mind, we have advised them to:

  • Minimise the number of people who are exposed to food by considering the area in which they have riders wait to collect food. We’ve asked that the area where riders wait is kept clean and separate from the area where food is being prepared.
  • Ensure all packaging and bags are properly sealed using tape or staples before it’s handed over to a rider. This is to prevent potentially infectious airborne material from coming in contact with the food during delivery. We have also encouraged restaurant partners to double bag delivery orders so that food is kept safe inside before it is handed to the customer.

If you have any concerns or questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our dedicated Rider Support team through the rider website or your app.

Atualizações do governo do Reino Unido

Atualizações do governo do Reino Unido

A segurança do nossos Riders, restaurantes parceiros e clientes é nossa prioridade.

Atualizações do governo do Reino Unido

  • Cobrir a boca e o nariz com um lenço de papel quando tossir ou espirrar;
  • Colocar lenços usados na lixeira imediatamente;
  • Lavar as mãos com água e sabão com frequência e usar gel desinfetante para as mãos se água e sabão não estiverem disponíveis;
  • Evitar ficar próximo de pessoas que não se sentem bem;
